What the smudge?

Posted by Sonia Brancato on

I searched for a long time for these – I had 3 conditions when looking to stock smudge - it had to be made from our herbs native to our country, be sustainable and locally grown.  When I
found these, I could feel the good energy vibrating off of them straight away and when I met the grower, it all made sense.
She’s a kind, heart-centred lady who grows the herbs on her farm just outside of Johannesburg and she makes her smudge accessible to even the small guy – not just the big crystals shops in the malls.  I’ve selected a few different ones for purchase – have a look on the website (or scroll down) and see what calls to you.

For those who use smudge I’ll be preaching to the choir here but for those who have never used it – I highly recommend it.

Smudging is basically smoke cleansing using dried herbs or resins.  It’s an ancient practice used by many cultures around the world, it’s not only used by Native Americans as Hollywood makes us believe.  Hindus and Buddhists burn incense, Greek Orthodox and Catholics burn Frankincense resin during Easter rituals, etc.

How can you use smudging in your life?

The smudge sticks can be burnt as they are or broken into little pieces into a bowl.

Smudging can be used to cleanse your crystals and other possessions you feel may have picked up some negative vibes - even your car.

Smudging can be used to energetically cleanse your house – at Spring time, New Year, after some difficult visitors.

When preparing for a ceremony or group meditation, I know some yoga instructors who smudge their yogis before starting class.

My favourite time to use smudge is to clear my space before a meditation or stepping into sacred work, I feel it helps to anchor my intentions, keeps me focused and helps me to feel spiritually clean and light.

Here is a link to a very informative, beautifully written article – as the writer says “Smoke cleansing can be profoundly beautiful, empowering, and supportive. Explore your history and your herbal allies so you can … move closer to your genuine self.”
